La Soufrière, nicknamed ‘the old lady’, is an active volcano in Guadeloupe national park, which dominates Basse Terre. It is the only active volcano on the island, currently in of rest. It is part of a volcanic set composed of Carmichael, le Nez cassé, l’Echelle, la Citerne, and la Madeleine volcanoes. It is one of the nine active volcanoes of the Lesser Antilles.
When the time is right, the top of la Soufrière offers views of an exceptional landscape which is well worth the trip (2 hours hiking).
